What is a CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist)?

Industrial Hygiene is the application of various arts and sciences for the purpose of protecting worker health and safety on their job site. This covers a lot of areas and we look forward to unpacking this industry for you. Examples include protecting a worker from chemical exposure, establishing proper chemical storage operating procedures, training the worker on identifying chemical exposure identifiers, the limits and proper fitting of personal protective equipment, and much more.

A Certified Industrial Hygienist is a certification that is obtained through academic training, field experience and a written exam. The requirements for the test and my certification verification can be viewed here.

What is IAQ (Indoor Air Quality)?

Indoor Air Quality refers to the relationship between the built environment and its occupants when it comes to airborne concentrations of contaminants. Different built environments may have different Indoor Air quality concerns. For example, residents may have mold-related or odor-related indoor air quality questions following water damage. Schools may have fresh air introduction air quality issues, and Commercial properties may have COVID air quality concerns. Industrial sites may be concerned with dusts. These are only a few of the kinds of Indoor air quality issues we are qualified to resolve.

Testing | Monitoring | Programming | Reporting | Improving

The way we provide modernized Certified Industrial Hygiene and Indoor Air Quality Consulting is by Testing, Monitoring, Programming, Reporting, and Improving.

Testing

Many situations require me to test by collecting samples. Whether that be air sampling or a surface sample, a water sample bulk material sample. These samples collected will always be sent to an independent and accredited laboratory to be analyzed, we do not do analysis of samples in house to keep out any conflict of interest possibilities. We have no interest in overselling sampling or conducting sampling that doesn’t answer key questions.

Monitoring

Another way that we answer questions is monitoring. In these cases we use instruments that give us live readings. For things like carbon dioxide, temperature relative humidity, Formaldehyde and Carbon monoxide, and much more. These airborne contaminants at their concentrations can tell a story and guide course of corrective action towards improved indoor air quality.

Programming

The other way we CIH and IAQ services will be addressed is through programming. Many regulatory standards have action items such as employee training, hazard control, ventilation requirements. Often when remediation needs to occur, there are standards and guidelines which need to be followed in order to protect the built environment and the people in the built environment. This is what we call programming . There is a lot of administrative things that we do on top of testing and monitoring that will help resolve any Industrial Hygiene or Indoor Air Quality issue.

Reporting

The next item is reporting. As we collect data from our assessment including testing monitoring and implementing programming we recognize the importance of bringing all relevant information together in a detailed report that addresses the concerns and gives professional opinions on courses of action when applicable. We will not leave you high and dry with a report.

Improving

The last item on our list is improving. We don’t want to just be consultants, we want to contribute towards improving the industry. Become published with our case studies, become a bridge between what students are learning in the classroom and field applications . Help people get into this industry. There are so many occupations that can fall under Industrial Hygiene and Indoor Air quality and a lot of subject areas that we can educate and guide you on.
